7 Baby Elephants That Will Cheer Up Your Day

The largest land-based animal in the world is the elephant. Their massive frames can seem quite intimidating, but before growing to such sizes they were, of course, babies. And elephant babies are ridiculously adorable! Some facts about elephant calves:

  • Baby elephants typically have a birth weight of roughly 113 kilograms and are typically just under a metre tall.
  • Usually, calves are quite hairy and may either be born with red or curly black hair on their foreheads.
  • Their eyesight is quite weak at first but they use touch, scent and sound to recognise their mothers.
  • Calves have a close attachments to their mothers, drinking their moms’ milk for up to two years and consuming up to 12 litres of milk a day!
  • At first, baby elephants have little control over their trunks beyond swinging it to and fro or sucking on it like a bay would suck its thumb. They often step on their trunks too.
